WALLPAPER PROPOSAL FOR THE HALLWAY WALL OF A BOTANICAL GARDEN

PILEA: wallpaper

Briefing: Create a wallpaper for the wall of the reception hall of a Botanical Garden with simple elements and based on plant motifs represented in an abstract way. Design one or two two-dimensional modules from which the final composition will be created based on a grid. Analyze what is requested: what is a botanical garden? what simple elements can I use to represent it graphically? Creative experimentation on the module under the assumptions proposed by Wucius Wong (form as a point, line, plane, simple, multiple, compound forms, etc.). Design the module(s). Experiment and create the continuity of forms based on a modular grid under the assumptions proposed by Wucius Wong (types of structure, variation, continuity, rhythm, texture, movement, etc.). Try different color palettes and select the most appropriate. Choose and do a mock up of the final wallpaper design.

Solution: I dedicated some time to take a look at the shape of differents leaves, plants, trees and mushrooms. I also took a look at wallpapers with nature motifs. I decided to choose the leave of a Chinese plant called Pilea peperomioides. Using simple forms such as circles and arcs I played around to obtain the final design. For the colours, I decided not to go for realistic shades, but for colors that would generate tranquility and a feeling of refuge, of welcome, that had an adequate contrast without being strident, colors that were sober, without being serious or boring. I also had to imagine what the wallpaper would look like in a given room, what colors would the surrounding walls, the ceiling, the floor, the furniture, which type of textures would be ideal to combine. I opted for a background in a very dark blue, not very bright and very sober, almost like a medium greenish grey very similar to teal, the large circles in a very light yellowish beige similar to ivory, as well as the lines that represent the petioles and join the motifs. Lastly, the circles representing the stem are in an almost orange ocher yellow color. This combination gets a suitable contrast between sobriety and luminosity. This dark background in a very bright room lowers the intensity without turning off the atmosphere, it adds calm. For this wallpaper I would choose, as decoration and furniture, very simple elements, almost minimalistic. A carpet, in the same color as the background of the wall, and the floor, in the same kind of beige beige/ivory. The sofa could be color mustard or ivory, similar to the one that appears on the paper.
